If readability is what you’re after, the most approachable mainstream translations are the New Living Translation and the New International Version, with the Christian Standard Bible close behind. They put the meaning of each phrase into plain modern English, so your energy goes into understanding the message instead of decoding old words.
Why some read easier than others
Every Bible balances two goals: staying close to the original Hebrew and Greek, or sounding natural in English. You can’t fully max out both at once. The easier-reading versions (NLT, NIV, CSB) render whole phrases into everyday English. The more literal ones (ESV, NASB, KJV) mirror the original wording more closely, which is excellent for detailed study but can feel formal. Neither end is better. The most readable options
The NLT is usually the easiest to read straight through. Clear, warm, modern, good for covering longer stretches. The NIV is a touch more formal but still very readable, and it’s the most widely used modern translation, so it’s easy to find and follow along with. The CSB splits the difference, readable but a bit closer to the wording, which is nice if you want easy without going as far as the NLT.
There’s also The Message, but that one’s a paraphrase, not a translation. It’s vivid and very easy, but it’s one author’s loose retelling, so treat it as a companion rather than your main Bible.
What “easy” doesn’t mean
Easier wording isn’t less accurate. These are all careful translations made by teams of scholars. It does mean a bit more interpreting happened on your behalf, smoothing phrases into natural English, which is a fair trade for a first Bible. As you go deeper, plenty of people keep a readable Bible for reading and check a more literal one for study. A parallel Bible or a free app makes that painless.
