People treat this like a trick question, and once in a while it is. For most readers, it isn’t. The NIV, ESV, and KJV are all careful, mainstream translations that millions of Christians trust. What actually separates them is one trade-off: how closely they stick to the original words versus how natural they sound in English.

The trade-off behind every translation
Word-for-word versions mirror the Hebrew and Greek as closely as English allows. More precise, sometimes stiffer. The ESV and NASB sit here, and so does the KJV. Thought-for-thought versions translate the meaning of each phrase into plain English. Easier to read, a little more interpreted along the way. The NIV and NLT sit here.

KJV
The historic one, and genuinely beautiful out loud. A lot of what “sounds biblical” to us comes straight from it. The snag for beginners is the 1611 English, the thees and thous and words that have quietly shifted meaning in four centuries. If you love the cadence, it rewards slow reading. If you’re brand new, it adds a hurdle that has nothing to do with faith. (The NKJV keeps the style but updates the old words.)
NIV
The most-read modern translation, and a middle path: faithful but readable. That balance is why it gets handed to new readers and used in so many churches. If you want one safe, easy default, this is it.
ESV
Leans word-for-word while still reading smoothly. Popular with people who want to study the wording closely, and it’s the translation we quote in the daily devotionals. A touch more formal than the NIV, but not hard.
So pick like this
New and want easy? NIV, or NLT for plainer still. Want to study the exact wording? ESV, or NASB if you want the most literal there is. Love the old language? KJV, or NKJV for an updated take.
Honestly, a lot of people read one and check a second when a verse really matters. A parallel Bible puts them side by side, and any free Bible app flips between them instantly.
One last thing, since it comes up: the KJV-only position isn’t the mainstream view.
