And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
Historical Context
Deuteronomy is set at the very end of Israel’s forty years in the wilderness. The nation is camped on the plains of Moab, just across the river from the land they were promised, and Moses is speaking to them one last time before they go in without him. He will not cross over himself. Much of the book is him looking back over everything that has happened since Egypt.
This verse is part of that looking back. Moses tells them to remember the whole way God led them. He gives those years a purpose: to humble them, to test them, and to reveal, in the testing, what was actually in their hearts. The forty years in the wilderness had begun as a judgment, after the people refused to enter the land the first time. But here, at the end, Moses does not frame the wandering only as punishment. He frames it as a long and difficult schooling, the kind that shows a person what they are made of once the usual comforts are gone.
Reflection
The line that stands out is that the wilderness was meant to show them what was in their own hearts. Hard stretches tend to do that. When things are comfortable, you never quite find out what you actually trust, or how you will act under real pressure. Take the supports away and you learn fast.
A hard season is not always only something to escape. Sometimes it is also showing you something true about yourself that you could not have seen any other way. That is not a reason to go looking for hardship, and it does not make a painful stretch any less painful. But looking back, the way Moses is asking them to look back, the wilderness years were not wasted time. Something was being formed the whole way through.
