Restores My Soul

A daily return to scripture

Tuesday, July 7, 2026

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 · ESV

Historical Context

Paul wrote this letter to the church in Philippi, a Roman colony in northern Greece and the first church he founded in Europe. He wrote it from prison, most likely in Rome in the early 60s AD, though some scholars place the imprisonment elsewhere. Either way, the striking thing is the tone. A man in chains is writing to tell other people not to be anxious.

Philippi was, by the standard historical account, a military town, settled generations earlier with retired Roman soldiers. That detail gives the last line its color. The word behind “guard” is commonly read as a soldier’s word, the kind you would use for a garrison posted to watch over a city. He isn’t promising the Philippians an easy life. He is promising them a guard.

Reflection

Notice what the verse does and doesn’t say. It doesn’t say there is nothing to be anxious about. There was plenty to be anxious about. It says to take the thing you are anxious about and turn it into a specific prayer, with thanksgiving mixed in, and hand it over.

The promise attached isn’t that you will get what you asked for, or even that you will feel calm. It’s that a peace you can’t manufacture or fully explain will stand watch over your heart while you wait. Peace here isn’t the absence of the storm. It’s a guard posted in the middle of it, keeping your heart from being overrun by the worry you just handed to God.
