Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Historical Context
The letter we call Hebrews never names its author, and the question has never been settled. The letter never identifies its readers either. Most interpreters take them to be Jewish Christians tempted to drift back toward the older, safer ways. Some argue instead for a mixed or Gentile readership. What the letter does make plain is pressure: these readers had already suffered for their faith, and staying the course had gotten costly. Many scholars place the letter before the temple fell in 70 AD, though the evidence allows a later date.
Chapter 11 answers that drift with a roll call: Abel, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Rahab, people who trusted God’s promises and mostly died before seeing them kept. Verse 1 is the sentence that names what carried them.
Reflection
The word translated “assurance” is genuinely argued over. Ancient readers heard something like substance or foundation. Some hear it instead as inward assurance, the confidence itself. The verse holds that disagreement. The chapter that follows may be the better definition anyway. Whatever the word’s exact edge, the people in that list acted as though the promise was solid before they could see it. Their confidence rested on the character of the promiser, not on visible odds. In the end the verse leaves a question more than a formula: not whether you can work up certainty, but where you rest your weight.
