A daily return to scripture

Sunday, September 27, 2026

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 · ESV

Historical Context

Tradition holds that this is Paul’s last writing, sent under his name to Timothy from a Roman prison not long before his death. A shift in style from his earlier letters has led part of the academic world to question that authorship, though most readers of the letter across church history have simply taken it at face value. On that traditional reading, Timothy received it as Paul’s own near the very end of his life. This stay in prison, unlike the writer’s earlier one in Rome, offered no real hope of release. Friends had scattered, and death looked close.

Nero ruled as emperor throughout this period, and a fire had recently destroyed much of Rome. Roman writers say Nero blamed it on Christians, and a wave of persecution against them followed. Timothy, meanwhile, was still young, leading a congregation on his own without Paul beside him, in a world where publicly identifying as a Christian was beginning to carry real risk.

Into that setting, Paul reminds Timothy where his footing must come from. Not from Paul’s presence, since that was ending. From the Scriptures Timothy had known since childhood, writings Paul says were breathed out by God and sufficient to prepare a person for whatever work still needed doing.

Reflection

Paul does not describe Scripture as one helpful resource among several. He calls it God-breathed, meaning its source is God himself, not merely wise or well-meaning writers. That claim carries a specific promise: this book can do four things for you. It teaches what is true, points out what is off, corrects mistakes, and trains you toward what is right.

That is a complete toolkit, not a partial one. You are not left needing another source to round it out. If Timothy could stand on this after Paul was gone, so can you on days when the person you counted on for direction is not there either.
