Historical Context

Paul wrote this letter to the church at Rome in the mid-to-late 50s AD, most likely from Corinth. He had never visited the congregation he addressed. Nero was on the throne in Rome, though nothing in the letter suggests the church was yet under pressure from the empire.

The congregation was young and diverse: Jewish believers, Gentile converts who had never set foot in a synagogue, and Gentiles who had worshipped alongside Jews for years without fully converting. Paul had not planted this church, so he could not assume that every member agreed on how grace and the law fit together.

A difficult question runs underneath these chapters. If God’s grace freely covers every sin, why not keep sinning and let it keep covering them? Paul raises that exact objection early in this section of the letter and then spends several arguments dismantling it. The danger came from within the church: the same doctrine that saved them could sound like a reason to keep sinning.

The argument closes on a single sentence. A congregation still grappling with what freedom from the law meant had to see that sin and grace do not settle their accounts in the same way.

Reflection

Sin does not hand out random bad luck. It pays exactly what it has always paid: death. Eternal life does not work that way. Nobody qualifies for it by good behavior, no matter how consistent. One is wages, earned and owed. The other is a gift, given without asking for anything in return.

The word behind wages was the term for a soldier’s ongoing pay, the ration that kept arriving as long as he remained enlisted. Sin is rarely a single bad decision in your past. It is more like continued service, and it keeps paying out as long as you remain enlisted.

Weigh that against your own life. Look honestly at what years of one habit have cost you. Then set it beside a gift that asks nothing of you and gives you life anyway. One you earn. The other you receive. Learn the difference, and let it decide which side you serve.
